Dunans Castle Native Woodland Joins the Public Register Dunans Castle Native Woodland Joins the Public Register

Posted by Charles Dixon-Spain on

Finally – finally – the woodland creation scheme has been loaded onto the Scottish Forestry’s Public Register. Saving any major objections, this means that our woodland has passed all the regulatory approvals and is now considered ready to get planted! Confirmation that the consultation has been successful will be given in mid-August, and we will then be able to fence and plant!  This is such a relief as it means that once planted we can apply for and receive verification for our carbon offset project, and this in turn generates the revenue to start significant works on the castle. The timetable for all of...

AIP#24 Spring: Update 2 AIP#24 Spring: Update 2

Posted by Charles Dixon-Spain on

I wanted to get another batch of photos to you while the jammers are still here. They have been working so hard to repair the arch into the courtyard - latterly with restoring the sandstone arch itself, as well as rescuing parts of the Ha-ha that were sagging. We've had great weather, the banter has been very funny, and we've spent a couple of after -hours sojourns in the Creggans Inn. In other words, like all weeks previously, this has been a delightful fortnight so far!  If you fancy taking part this September I recommend going to youtube.com to look...

If you want to know more about Dunans and the project to restore both the castle and the bridge, then the Conservation Plan, published in 2014 has all the detail you could ask for, including the history of Dunans, its heraldry and a full condition survey from 2013. Charles recommends the book as the definitive account of Dunans Castle from 1590 to the present day, especially if you are unable to visit to learn about the project firsthand. For more information on the project and our efforts to restore the castle you can watch our videos here -> https://youtube.com/@CharlesDixonSpain

Dunans Castle Clearance Continues in Kitchen & Library: More Images Dunans Castle Clearance Continues in Kitchen & Library: More Images

Posted by Anne MacPhail on

The clearance of the back two compartments of the castle has taken much longer than the others, simply because they aren’t accessible by the minidigger and there’s not enough room for more than a couple of workers. Our luck continues with the floors, which are all concrete, making clearance much much easier than suspended floors. … Continue reading Dunans Castle Clearance Continues in Kitchen & Library: More Images
